Dear members of the international community,
In light of the recent tragic events on the Magdeburg Christmas Market, we want to reach out to you with a heartfelt message of support and solidarity. We understand that the perpetrator’s background has led to concerns within the international community, and we deeply regret to hear about incidents of hostility against migrants following this tragedy. Such actions are unacceptable and do not reflect the values of the vast majority of people in Magdeburg.
As representatives of the independent cultural scene in this city, we want to assure you that you are welcome here. The cultural institutions of Magdeburg are spaces of openness, diversity, and mutual respect. Most people in our community understand the importance of distinguishing between an individual’s actions and entire groups of people. Hatred and prejudice have no place in our city, and we stand united against them.
That said, we acknowledge that these are challenging times, and we encourage you to remain cautious as a precaution. Please know that every cultural venue and event space affiliated with our network is a safe and welcoming refuge for you. Should you ever feel threatened or unsafe, you can turn to these spaces for support. They will always do their best to provide safety, call for assistance if needed, and ensure you feel protected.
We want you to know that you are not alone. Magdeburg is your home too, and we value the rich contributions you bring to our city’s cultural and social fabric. Let us work together to foster understanding and solidarity in these difficult times.
With warm regards and unwavering support,
Philipp Schmidt
